Similkameen Dam update on OBWB website

Similkameen River Dam Proposal Update
Okanagan County PUD No. 1 (PUD) has decided to renew its efforts to obtain a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license to restore its Enloe Hydroelectric Project. The Project involves restoration of the hydro power plant located on the Similkameen River about three miles northwest of Oroville.

The PUD invites your comment on the draft license application. The comment period begins on November 7, 2007 and will close on February 4, 2008.

Information about the proposal can be found on the Okanagan Basin Water Board website at: http://www.obwb.ca/srdpu/

Osoyoos Water Forum Website

Hello All,

We now have an Osoyoos Lake Water Science Forum website, with all the presentations and media coverage of the events, hosted by the Okanagan Basin Water Board: http://www.obwb.ca/olwsf/

Please let us know if there are more things you'd like added to this site.

The forward momentum and positive connections developed at the Forum have the power to drive real improvements in Osoyoos Lake water quality.

Communications with Ken Hall

Ken,

As an attendee to the Osoyoos Water Lake Forum, let me say how much I enjoyed your presence. Your energy and concern and especially your common sense, came across strongly.

In particular, I liked your idea of a measuring well below the septic lagoons at the golf course to be monitored by students. I know the students were excited by the prospect of hands on field work. I talked to Stu Wells (long time old buddy of mine) about the project and he is very interested in driving it forward. If I can do anything in that regard, let
me know.

Congratulations Ken, and keep up the good work.

Yours truly,
Fred Schiller

Dear Fred:

It would be good to get some students monitoring the quality of the Osoyoos well water.
Over the next few months, I plan to get all of the nutrient data that I can from the Provincial government to see if I can start to understand why the concentration of P in Osoyoos Lake is double that of Okanagan Lake when Okanagan Lake is providing 80% of the water that enters Osoyoos Lake. That means that the other 20% of the water that comes into Osoyoos Lake must be quite contaminated with P.

Cheers,

Ken Hall

Hi to all attendees of the Osoyoos Lake Water Science Forum. Among many other outcomes the Forum appeared to be successfull in raising awareness, creating energy, and providing momentum. Some of the organizing committee thought that this site would provide a place for people to keep the interest and momentum going through communication. I have had a few suggestions from friends about steps we can all take, and I am sure there are many other ideas.

You could send an email of appreciation to your favourite presenter or your top 3 presenters

You could attend the next meetting of the Osoyoos Lake Water Quality Society (maybe join)

You could contact Eike Sceffler about the Oxbow Restoration Society, I'm sure that the society will be hosting an in depth presentation of their new data.

You could post something to this blog site

Enjoy, have fun, make a difference

Stu Wells
